Our Screening Room selection for April is the screwball comedy celebrating its 70th birthday in 2023, How To Marry A Millionaire. Combining the star power of Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall, and utilising the brand new Cinemascope widescreen technology, its a glamorous and gleefully silly tale of misadventures in the course of hunting for The One, soundtracked by one of the first ever film scores recorded in stereo.

We’re at the Observatory on St. George’s Day this year for films inspired by great English writers; our final film of the evening is Shakespeare In Love. The romcom reimagining of Shakespeare’s life won seven Oscars, and cleverly blends several Shakespearean storylines into a merry misadventure through Elizabethan London.

A masterful adaptation of Austen’s most beloved work
We’re at the Observatory on St. George’s Day this year for films inspired by great English writers; naturally, we couldn’t leave out an adaptation of the UK’s second-favourite novel so we’re screening the acclaimed 2005 version of Pride And Prejudice, starring an Oscar-nominated Kiera Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet.

Our fairytale romance theme takes a decidedly darker turn with the 2004 film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical The Phantom Of The Opera. Inspired by Gaston Leroux’s classic novel, this visually striking tale of obsession and doomed love features all of the beloved songs from the stage show, as well as the Oscar-nominated original ‘Learn To Be Lonely’.

We’re turning the Loco Klub into a speakeasy this March for two Roaring 20s-inspired film screenings! Next up is Baz Luhrmann’s opulent, Oscar-winning version of The Great Gatsby. Full of the grandiose spectacle you’d expect from both the director and an adaptation of this seminal novella, its emotional roots lie within Leonardo DiCaprio’s sublime performance as the eponymous, enigmatic man behind the parties.
