IN BRUGES at Wiper & True Taproom
“GO TO BRUGES, HAVE A NICE COLD PINT, AND WAIT FOR ALL THIS TO BLOW OVER…”
We’re partnering with our friends at Wiper and True throughout 2025 for a series of cult comedy screenings. Our March screening is the day after St Patrick’s Day, so naturally we’re showing a film set in Belgium (albeit with Irish actors!). It’s the perfect pairing of deliciously dark comedy and gorgeous local beer at this screening of In Bruges. Ticket includes welcome pint on arrival.

CLUE at Averys Wine Cellars
“I think it was Tim Curry, with the cult classic, in the wine cellar…”
To start our 2025 Vintage Screenings, we’re bringing one of our favourite films back to Averys just in time for its namesake celebration - it’s the one and only Groundhog Day! In keeping with the time loop theme, we’ll be tasting wines that are all from the same family - you’ll keep hearing the same name again and again, but each new wine has its own unique twist…!

BRAZIL at The Planetarium
40 years ago, Sam Lowry had his first dream - and things escalated rapidly
Our second ‘eccentric sci-fi’ screening this March is Terry Gilliam’s dystopian dark comedy Brazil. This surreal, Kafkaesque satire has proven hugely influential, with everything from Batman to Star Wars paying tribute since its release - it’s consistently ranked among the greatest British films of all time, and some of its themes are as relevant as ever four decades on.

POOR THINGS at The Mount Without
Back on the big screen: the genre-bending postmodern comedy smash hit
We’re pleased to present a screening of 2024’s Oscar-winning smash hit Poor Things. Emma Stone deservedly took home her second Oscar for her performance as the recently resurrected Bella Baxter in this adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s cult novel. Its part steampunk, part gothic fairytale aesthetic is a great match for The Mount Without’s stunning environ!

WITHNAIL & I at Wiper & True Taproom (Extra Screening)
Chase away the January blues with the ultimate cult comedy, in a brewery
We’re partnering with Wiper & True for a screening of Withnail & I to liven up the deep midwinter this January. Head to this award-winning local brewery’s taproom in Old Market and enjoy Bruce Robinson’s riotous dark comedy. Enjoy a complimentary welcome pint, plus a range of delicious alcohol-free beers in support of Dry January participants!

STARSHIP TROOPERS at The Planetarium
This scathing satire of military might takes you to the heart of the ugly bugs’ crawl
Just in time for Halloween, we’re bringing a double bill of 90s nastiness to the Planetarium, starting with the bombastic Starship Troopers. The irony of Paul Verhoeven’s startling send-up of fascism went over some contemporary critics’ heads, but its cult reputation as an action-packed sci-fi satire endures. Would you like to know more? Then enlist in the brutal battle against the bugs…

SILENT SCREAMS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT HORROR at St Mary Redcliffe
Explore the origins of horror cinema, with a very special live organ recital
Join us at St Mary Redcliffe this October for a very special anthology screening of some of the earliest horror films ever made. These seldom-screened gems from cinematic history will be accompanied by a live, entirely improvised organ recital by the award-winning composer Dr. David Bednall, blending silent cinema with live music to create a unique performance that promises to add another dimension to these remarkable films.

THE LOST BOYS at Arnos Vale Cemetery
Witches have broomsticks, but in this 80s comedy-horror, vampires have motorbikes
Due to massive demand in 2023, we’re bringing the vampire bikers sensation The Lost Boys back to the big screen this October. Devilishly funny as well as creepy, it’s a romp through 80s pop culture that has rightfully earned its place in the ‘cult classics’ pantheon.

NATURAL BORN KILLERS at Redcliffe Caves
Three decades on, Stone’s satirical shocker still hits hard - and takes no prisoners
Saturday’s programme continues with one of the most controversial and original films of the 1990s, Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers. This shocking study of crime and violence - and the media’s obsession with them - is a bleak and bloody deep dive into the darkest corners of the soul; its whirlwind, psychedelic editing and high-octane soundtrack help make it an exhilarating and unforgettable watch that will linger long in the memory!

DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB at Redcliffe Caves
“Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room…”
Saturday’s Underground Cinema selections explore dystopia and the darker side of the human psyche, and where better to begin than a 60th anniversary screening of Dr Strangelove? Stanley Kubrick’s satirical magnum opus is somehow as equally hysterical, chilling and relevant now as it was upon its release, and it remains a must-see for any cinema fan.

KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS at Averys Wine Cellars
Eight heirs to murder, four wines to taste, one unmissable evening
Voted by the BFI as the 6th best British film ever made, enjoy Ealing comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets in Averys Wine Cellar - with a ‘variation on a theme’ wine tasting - as part of our celebration of several Ealing comedies’ 75th birthdays in 2024.

MAGNOLIA: Epics @ Everyman
This tragicomic ensemble character study is operatic in scope and scale
Our second collaboration with Everyman Bristol is a 25th anniversary screening of Magnolia, which truly embodies “epic” in its rich mosaic of weird and wonderful characters played to perfection by an ensemble cast from Tom Cruise and Philip Seymour Hoffmann to Juliane Moore and William H. Macy. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, The Master), this haunting anthology that will linger long in the memory.

BRASSED OFF at Screening Room
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you might even want to take up the flugelhorn
April’s Screening Room selection is Mark Herman’s poignant comedy-drama Brassed Off. Pete Postlethwaite leads an ensemble cast in this story of Grimley Colliery Band and their dual struggle to reach the National Brass Band Finals against the backdrop of the increasing uncertainty about the future of the local mine. 40 years on from the miners’ strikes, this underrated gem of modern British cinema has lost none of its pathos and charm.

SIDEWAYS: 20th Anniversary Screening at Averys Wine Cellars
The perfect pairing of wine and film turns 20
We’re celebrating the 20th anniversary (and the 8th anniversary of our Vintage Screening series) with the ultimate wine film: Sideways! Join Miles and Jack on a misanthropic misadventure through California’s wine country with a tasting exploring some of the key grapes from the film - no comment on the Merlot…

SCROOGED at Clifton Observatory
Bill Murray delivers the right amount of “Bah! Humbug” in this darkly comic Dickens do-over
Just in time for the holiday, we’re bringing two slightly more adult-orientated Christmas crackers to our Spirit Of Cinema series at the Observatory, starting with the Dickens-inspired Scrooge. Bill Murray is at his grouchy best as a TV executive forced to see the error of his ways, supported by a smorgasbord of cameos. Enjoy it alongside two drinks to get you in the seasonal spirit (or non-alcoholic alternatives).

KRAMPUS at Redcliffe Caves
It sees you when you’re sleeping. It knows when you’re awake…
In case you’re still yearning for Horror In The Caves, or just want a strong antidote to the usual Christmas offerings, we present the creepily good comedy-horror Krampus, which breathes life into the more sinister side of the traditional Santa Claus mythology. It’s a frighteningly good time, but definitely not one for the whole family!

THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933) at Redcliffe Caves
Who said what you can’t see can’t hurt you…?
Our Matinee Screenings, showcase vintage films from the horror vault, return to the Caves on Saturday and Sunday mornings, starting with a 90th anniversary screening of The Invisible Man. Claude Rains excels as the titular mad scientist in his breakthrough role, and the mixture of groundbreaking SFX, dark humour and surreal sequences make this a wickedly eerie, genre-defying treat even nine decades on.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE at Arnos Vale Cemetery
Thought Twilight was the definitive vampire romance? Think again…
Our night of refreshingly original vampire films at Arnos Vale continues with Jim Jarmusch’s romantic comedy-drama Only Lovers Left Alive. Starring Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as two sophisticated, lovesick vampires, it’s a fantastical, trancelike exploration of what it means to be human, delivering an offbeat and unforgettable take on vampirism in Jarmusch’s inimitable style.

ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES at Arnos Vale Cemetery

PARASITE at Screening Room
This scathing South Korean social satire is a modern masterpiece
Our Screening Room Series is back at Averys for 2023! Starting the year is Parasite, the first non English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Bong Joon-Ho’s savage social satire wowed audiences upon its release in late 2019. Darkly hilarious, deeply unsettling and full of shocking twists and turns, it’s a must-see highlight of 21st Century filmmaking that will leave you on the edge of your seat…

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA at Bristol Improv Theatre
Essential viewing for any 80s action/comedy afficionado
Our John Carpenter mini-fest continues with the cult kung-fu comedy classic Big Trouble in Little China. A riotous blend of martial arts, fantasy, action-adventure and a healthy dose of spooky fantasy, this rollercoaster of a film is also notable for Kurt Russell’s hilarious turn as possibly the least heroic hero in action movie history…

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE at Averys Wine Cellars
Rounding off April at Averys is the Oscar-winning tragicomedy Little Miss Sunshine - this film follows the misadventures of a dysfunctional family, so we’re pairing it with wines inspired by some of the personalities of the main characters…

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL in Redcliffe Caves
Saturday afternoon at Redcliffe Caves continues with another twist on Arthurian legend, the wickedly silly dark comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

KNIVES OUT at Averys Wine Cellars
In tribute to this modern whodunnit, this is a Vintage Screening with a twist -one of the mystery wines will be an ‘odd wine out’, and with a few tasting note clues along the way, it’s up to you to work out which wine it is!
