The Oscar-winning road trip biopic, paired with wines from along the route

2024 marks the 20th anniversary of The Motorcycle Diaries, the critically acclaimed biopic recounting Ernesto ‘Che’ Guavara’s fateful and formative road trip that set the young medical student on the path to becoming one of the most famous figures of the century. An exciting new collaboration with TEDxBRISTOL

We’re delighted to announce the first in an exciting series combining great films with insightful talks from experts in collaboration with TEXxBRISTOL, starting with ‘Future on Film’. Alongside a screening of the startlingly prescient sci-fi Ex Machina, 2023 TEDxBRISTOL speaker Anna Davey-Mitchell will host a fascinating introductory talk about AI and the history of simulated humans, and how films like Ex Machina can help us consider future ramifications for humanity.

A double bill of century-old comedy with a very special score

Join us at St Mary Redcliffe this April for a very special centenary double bill screening of two films from one of the all-time great filmmakers and performers, Buster Keaton, accompanied by a live, entirely improvised organ recital by the award-winning composer Dr. David Bednall, blending silent cinema with live music to create a unique performance that promises to add another dimension to Keaton’s capers, 100 years since they first delighted audiences.

To celebrate St. George’s Day, we’re screening films inspired by English literature, and there was an obvious choice for our animated offering… We’re screening Walt Disney’s thirteenth film, the 1951 Lewis Carroll adaptation Alice In Wonderland. It’s regarded as an important animation milestone - not to mention one of Disney’s most surreal outputs for decades!

This April, it’s time for our annual combination of whodunnit and wine tasting! A twist on the normal Vintage Screening format, we’ll be serving the wines blind and asking you to identify the Odd Wine Out, giving you hints along the way… For 2023, we’ll be testing your tastebuds while you enjoy Clue, the deliciously dark comedy inspired by the beloved board game - and yes, we’ll be showing all three of the possible endings!

Our fairytale romance theme takes a decidedly darker turn with the 2004 film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical The Phantom Of The Opera. Inspired by Gaston Leroux’s classic novel, this visually striking tale of obsession and doomed love features all of the beloved songs from the stage show, as well as the Oscar-nominated original ‘Learn To Be Lonely’.

Our first March 2023 date at the Mount Without explores fairytale romance, and if you’re a fan of Disney’s animated version of Beauty And The Beast then this is the day your dreams come true…! It was the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, where its memorable score won two Oscars.

Rounding off April at Averys is the Oscar-winning tragicomedy Little Miss Sunshine - this film follows the misadventures of a dysfunctional family, so we’re pairing it with wines inspired by some of the personalities of the main characters…

Kenneth Branagh’s acclaimed adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy comes to Averys Wine Cellars this April. Since the film was set in Sicily and filmed in Chianti, expect this screening to be accompanied by some of the finest examples of Italian wine!

Our first April Spirit Of Cinema selection continues the day’s jazz theme with the madcap romcom/crime caper Some Like It Hot. Enjoy it alongside two Gin & Tonics, each made with a different artisan gin.
