COCOON at The Planetarium
Like its OAP protagonists, this comedy-drama has aged beautifully
For April’s Planetarium outing, we’re hosting a double bill of sci-fi films from the acclaimed director Ron Howard. First up is a 40th anniversary screening of Cocoon. This heartwarming tale may have E.T. influences, but it’s got a very human heart as it explores youth and ageing in a timeless manner. No wonder actor Don Ameche took home an Oscar for this gem.

APOLLO 13 at The Planetarium
30 years of the classic space drama, on the anniversary of the mission launch itself
Our double bill of Ron Howard films continues with a double milestone. Not only is his Oscar-winning biopic Apollo 13 turning 30 this year, but we’re screening it on the 55th anniversary of the launch of the real-life mission. It’s a remarkable adaptation of a nail-biting true story, that deserves to be seen on the Planetarium’s big screen!

CASABLANCA at Averys Wine Cellars

Returning to our programming for the first time in years - and now with an extra date added due to demand! - is the perennial classic Casablanca. Deservedly considered one of the greatest films of all time, we’ll be screening the 4K restoration at Averys, alongside wines from the home nations of some of the key characters. It’s the perfect way to enjoy another viewing, or to discover its magic for the first time.

COMMANDO at Averys Wine Cellars
There are action films. There are B-movies. And then there’s Commando
This deliriously entertaining misadventure movie is full of spectacle while placing its tongue firmly in its cheek; Arnie delivers one-liners that’d make Roger Moore’s 007 groan with a straight face and more explosions than a NYE firework display. We’re pairing this 40-year-old firecracker of a film with South American wines, in honour of the fictional in-film nation of Val Verde.

Expect a pop-up record shop, great beer, head-banging pre-film soundtrack, then enjoy this hilarious & affectionate satire on the metal genre, with a recorded intro from some of the cast and crew. Brought to you in collaboration with Bristol’s own metal pub The Gryphon!

THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES at Averys Wine Cellars
The Oscar-winning road trip biopic, paired with wines from along the route
2024 marks the 20th anniversary of The Motorcycle Diaries, the critically acclaimed biopic recounting Ernesto ‘Che’ Guavara’s fateful and formative road trip that set the young medical student on the path to becoming one of the most famous figures of the century. We’ll be pairing the film with wines from some of the countries and regions that Che and his friend Alberto visit on their journey through South America.

April’s Screening Room selection is Mark Herman’s poignant comedy-drama Brassed Off. Pete Postlethwaite leads an ensemble cast in this story of Grimley Colliery Band and their dual struggle to reach the National Brass Band Finals against the backdrop of the increasing uncertainty about the future of the local mine. 40 years on from the miners’ strikes, this underrated gem of modern British cinema has lost none of its pathos and charm.

We’re delighted to announce the first in an exciting series combining great films with insightful talks from experts in collaboration with TEXxBRISTOL, starting with ‘Future on Film’. Alongside a screening of the startlingly prescient sci-fi Ex Machina, 2023 TEDxBRISTOL speaker Anna Davey-Mitchell will host a fascinating introductory talk about AI and the history of simulated humans, and how films like Ex Machina can help us consider future ramifications for humanity.

This April we’re screening two of the great boxing films at our Spirit Of Cinema series! Our second screening is the Oscar-winning biopic Raging Bull. Martin Scorsese’s fourth collaboration with Robert DeNiro is often cited as a career high for both men, and it’s routinely named as one of the greatest films of all time.

This April we’re screening two of the great boxing films at our Spirit Of Cinema series! Our first screening is Sylvester Stallone’s career-launching bildungsroman Rocky, which won three Oscars including Best Picture. It’s a true pop culture cornerstone.

We’re at the Observatory on St. George’s Day this year for films inspired by great English writers; our final film of the evening is Shakespeare In Love. The romcom reimagining of Shakespeare’s life won seven Oscars, and cleverly blends several Shakespearean storylines into a merry misadventure through Elizabethan London.

A masterful adaptation of Austen’s most beloved work
We’re at the Observatory on St. George’s Day this year for films inspired by great English writers; naturally, we couldn’t leave out an adaptation of the UK’s second-favourite novel so we’re screening the acclaimed 2005 version of Pride And Prejudice, starring an Oscar-nominated Kiera Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet.

To celebrate St. George’s Day, we’re screening films inspired by English literature, and there was an obvious choice for our animated offering… We’re screening Walt Disney’s thirteenth film, the 1951 Lewis Carroll adaptation Alice In Wonderland. It’s regarded as an important animation milestone - not to mention one of Disney’s most surreal outputs for decades!
