COCOON at The Planetarium
Like its OAP protagonists, this comedy-drama has aged beautifully
For April’s Planetarium outing, we’re hosting a double bill of sci-fi films from the acclaimed director Ron Howard. First up is a 40th anniversary screening of Cocoon. This heartwarming tale may have E.T. influences, but it’s got a very human heart as it explores youth and ageing in a timeless manner. No wonder actor Don Ameche took home an Oscar for this gem.

APOLLO 13 at The Planetarium
30 years of the classic space drama, on the anniversary of the mission launch itself
Our double bill of Ron Howard films continues with a double milestone. Not only is his Oscar-winning biopic Apollo 13 turning 30 this year, but we’re screening it on the 55th anniversary of the launch of the real-life mission. It’s a remarkable adaptation of a nail-biting true story, that deserves to be seen on the Planetarium’s big screen!

CASABLANCA at Averys Wine Cellars

Returning to our programming for the first time in years - and now with an extra date added due to demand! - is the perennial classic Casablanca. Deservedly considered one of the greatest films of all time, we’ll be screening the 4K restoration at Averys, alongside wines from the home nations of some of the key characters. It’s the perfect way to enjoy another viewing, or to discover its magic for the first time.

We’re rounding off November’s screenings at the Planetarium with a special screening of Blade Runner: The Final Cut. This is the only cut of the legendary sci-fi thriller that director Ridley Scott had complete artistic control over, and was only released in 2007; Scott considers it the definitive version, and we’re thrilled to be bringing it to the big screen.

Just in time for its 15th anniversary, we’re screening Moon at the Planetarium this November. Sam Rockwell stars in Duncan Jones' moody, unsettling debut feature; it’s a gripping watch, made all the more impressive by the film’s comparatively low budget, proving you don’t it doesn’t cost the earth (surely “moon”? - Ed.) to make top quality sci-fi!

THE THIRD MAN at Averys Wine Cellars

Our Autumn Vintage Screenings continue with the film noir classic The Third Man, which turns 75 this year. In tribute to this film’s moody Vienna setting, this tasting will focus on Austrian wines to enjoy alongside this seminal piece of cinema history.

Kenneth Branagh’s in grave danger in this electrifying adaptation
In the build-up to Halloween, we present a 30th anniversary screening of Kenneth Branagh’s blood-soaked adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. This grisly retelling of a true horror classic, produced by Francis Ford Coppola, is one of the more faithful adaptations of the source material, and we’re delighted to screen this restoration from the original negatives in a suitably atmospheric venue this October!

FIRESTARTER (1984) at Redcliffe Caves
Drew Barrymore blazes a trail as a preternatural young prodigy
The double bill of 1984 Stephen King adaptations continues at Redciiffe Caves. Firestarter is full of searing pyrotechnical special effects, and a young Drew Barrymore provides a memorable turn in this adaptation of one of King’s more thought-provoking sci-fi chillers, which was surely a major influence on Stranger Things.

REAR WINDOW at Averys Wine Cellars
All’s not as it seems in this wine flight fit for the master of mystery…
Our weekend of vintage psychological thrillers at Averys concludes with a 70th anniversary screening of Hitchcock’s timeless classic Rear Window. James Stewart’s second collaboration with Hitchcock is one of his finest hours, and we’re pairing it with wines that each have a Hitchcockian twist to them that make them unusual in their respective categories… Intrigued? We hope so!

A weekend of vintage psychological thrillers at Averys begins with an 80th anniversary Vintage Screening of Gaslight. Ingrid Bergman’s Oscar-winning performance is one of her finest, and the film remains so infamous that it has leant its name to the 21st Century term ‘gaslighting’. We’ll be pairing this extraordinary film with wines inspired by the characters and cast.

As the weather (hopefully!) warms up towards the end of May, celebrating the 25th anniversary of a sun-soaked but chilling contemporary classic. Anthony Minghella’s star-studded, Oscar-nominated adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel sees Matt Damon transform into the sociopathic conman Tom Ripley - and given the film’s glorious Italian setting, we’ll be pairing it with wines from across this fantastic country.
