THE GODFATHER PART II: 50th Anniversary Screening at Averys Wine Cellars
Italian wine, food and one of the greatest films ever - how can you refuse…?
Due to massive demand, we’ve added another date! Join us for an exceptional evening in Averys Wine Cellars celebrating the 50th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece sequel. This special Vintage Screening will include a tasting of six Sicilian and southern Italian wines throughout the film, as well as a Godfather-inspired buffet meal during the interval courtesy of Toff’s Pasta.

INTERSTELLAR at The Planetarium
Getting to screen this festival favourite is a surprise Christmas treat
Our final film of the year in the Planetarium is a truly special one and a late announcement, but we finally have screening rights again! Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning epic space odyssey was made for the big screen, and this screening includes some of the most breathtaking scenes restored to their IMAX ratios for an extra-detailed viewing.

THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL at Clifton College Chapel
There’s magic in the air in this quintessentially Muppet take on a classic
Due to huge demand, we’ve added an extra screening of one of the all-time great Dickens adaptations, The Muppet Christmas Carol. In addition to all of the usual ensemble cast of Kermit and friends, Michael Caine plays it straight as Ebenezer Scrooge, in a career highlight performance that underpins the trademark Muppet zaniness with real pathos that will warm even the sternest of hearts.

STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE at The Planetarium
Take a walk on the Dark Side for the first prequel’s 25th birthday
Our second sci-fi selection from 1999 at the Planetarium this December is the original Star Wars prequel, The Phantom Menace. Debate over the prequels still rages, but if you’re a millennial then memories of podracing, John Williams’ score and that lightsaber battle surely stir some deep-rooted emotions. Search your feelings; you know it to be true.

HARRY POTTER & THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS at Clifton College Chapel [EARLY SCREENING]
Relive the magic 20 years since the spellbinding sequel first hit cinemas
Join us this Christmas season in one of Bristol’s most beautiful venues, Clifton College Chapel, for a special series of screenings of the first three Harry Potter films. The screenings at this magical venue continue with Chamber Of Secrets, a decidedly darker sequel to the original, yet still retaining all of the charm of its predecessor, and the spirit of the source material.

MEN IN BLACK at The Planetarium
Something’s bugging earth’s foremost extraterrestrial experts - something big…
It’s back to the 90s again for our screening of the darkly comic action sci-fi, Men In Black. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones team up to save the planet from a seriously ugly alien menace (no offence, Vincent D’Onofrio!) in this tongue-in-cheek misadventure from the director behind Addams Family Values.

THE IRON GIANT at The Planetarium
It would take a heart of stone not to warm to this iron man
Our final weekend of Planetarium screenings in 2024 starts with a double bill of classics from 1999, as they celebrate their 25th anniversaries. ALIEN: DIRECTOR'S CUT [Extra Screening] at The Planetarium
Ridley Scott's edit of his horror sci-fi masterpiece is still a cut above the rest
Due to massive demand, we’ve added a screening of the 2003 cut of Ridley Scott’s game-changing sci-fi horror Alien. This remastered and reworked cut ratchets up the tension and restores some sequences from the cutting room floor, including one of the most controversial scenes from the entire franchise. It's a futuristic fright-fest and pure cinema genius that’s a perfect antidote to Christmas programming!

ALIEN: ROMULUS at The Planetarium
A return to form for the beloved sci-fi horror franchise
We’re excited to be hosting one of the first non-theatrical screenings of Alien: Romulus this December. Director Fede Alvarez’s trademark claustrophobic horror is a great match for this beloved franchise, and his love for the original is apparent. Steel your nerves, and remember: in the Planetarium, everyone can hear you scream…!

OPPENHEIMER at The Planetarium
We’re bringing the blockbuster biopic back to the big screen
If you missed Oppenheimer in cinemas, then you need to see it in the Planetarium this December. If you saw Christopher Nolan’s multi-Oscar-winning magnum opus, then you already know that only the big screen does it justice! Join us for this astonishing epic biopic that sees one of the 21st Century’s most acclaimed directors raise the bar once again.

WALL•E at The Planetarium
“In space, no-one can hear you clean”
An extra screening of the family-friendly sci-fi fantasy hit, presented back on the big screen at the Planetarium. The eponymous robot is a global sensation in waste allocation - until he embarks on an out-of-this-world misadventure…

THE HOLDOVERS at The Mount Without
“Giamatti and Payne are a movie match made in heaven” - Movieweb
Join us at The Mount Without for a Christmastime screening of last year’s award-winning comedy-drama, which reunited director Alexander Payne and star Paul Giamatti, who first worked together on another festival favourite, Sideways. Funny, poignant and heartwarming, with a beautiful retro visual style, it’s sure to become a staple of the season.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY... at Clifton Observatory
Good things come to those who wait in this romcom for the ages
Our second Christmas-themed Spirit Of Cinema screening is Rob Reiner & Nora Ephron’s iconic romcom When Harry Met Sally… Whilst some purists may argue that it’s not strictly a Christmas movie, its December setting, Christmas-themed montages and wittily romantic storyline make this an ideal festive feel-good watch, perfectly paired with seasonal drinks.

SCROOGED at Clifton Observatory
Bill Murray delivers the right amount of “Bah! Humbug” in this darkly comic Dickens do-over
Just in time for the holiday, we’re bringing two slightly more adult-orientated Christmas crackers to our Spirit Of Cinema series at the Observatory, starting with the Dickens-inspired Scrooge. Bill Murray is at his grouchy best as a TV executive forced to see the error of his ways, supported by a smorgasbord of cameos. Enjoy it alongside two drinks to get you in the seasonal spirit (or non-alcoholic alternatives).

DOUBLE BILL: THE SNOWMAN / THE SNOWMAN & THE SNOWDOG at Clifton Observatory
One of the defining British Christmas films, and its heart-melting sequel
Just in time for Christmas, we’re presenting a very special double bill at Clifton Observatory: Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman, screened back to back with The Snowman & The Snowdog. The Oscar-nominated original and its stunning sequel have entertained generations, and we’re delighted to presenting them together. Against the backdrop of Avon Gorge, you’ll feel like you’re walking in the air…

THE DESCENT at Redcliffe Caves
This coal-black cave-based chiller is the ultimate antidote to festive cheer…!
Due to phenomenal demand at Halloween, we’re finishing our Caves screenings this December with one more screening of the suffocatingly scary cult favourite The Descent. Watching it in the Caves is a truly immersive, and terrifying, experience, and probably unsuitable for anyone with severe claustrophobia. If you want the antithesis of a Christmas viewing experience then this is it – but you have been warned!
